Scotland's Fun 4s and Super 5s Football
Share
If you’re a parent or parent coach in Scotland, you’ve possibly heard the terms Fun 4s and Super 5s mentioned at some point. These formats are the bread and butter of the Scottish FA’s (SFA) "Player Pathway", a system designed to make sure kids fall in love with football before they ever have to worry about league tables or offside traps.
Here is everything you need to know about the small-sided game in Scotland.
What are Fun 4s and Super 5s?
In Scotland, youth football is broken down into "small-sided games" to ensure children get as many touches of the ball as possible.
- Fun 4s (Ages 6-7): This is the very first step. There are no goalkeepers, and the emphasis is entirely on dribbling, passing, and scoring goals. It’s high-energy and focuses on the "Desire to Play."
- Super 5s (Age 8): This is the transition stage. It introduces a goalkeeper and a slightly larger pitch, teaching kids the basics of "team" roles while still keeping the game fast and fluid.
A Brief History
The shift toward small-sided games wasn't an accident. In the late 1990s and early 2000s, legendary SFA Technical Director Andy Roxburgh (who later moved to UEFA) pioneered the idea that 11-a-side football was a game "designed by adults for adults."
Research showed that on full-size pitches, children barely touched the ball. By the 2011-2012 season, the SFA and the Scottish Youth FA (SYFA) fully formalised the Player Pathway, mandating that all football for Under-12s must be small-sided. The goal was simple: more touches, more decisions, more goals, and more fun.
The Guidelines: Pitch, Ball, and Goal Sizes
To keep the environment right for development, the SFA has strict recommendations for equipment and pitch dimensions. Using the wrong size ball or a goal that is too big can actually hinder a child’s technique.
| Feature | Fun 4s (U6 & U7) | Super 5s (U8) |
| Players | 4 v 4 (No GK) | 5 v 5 (Includes GK) |
| Pitch Size | 30m x 20m | 40m x 20m |
| Goal Size (Max.) | 2.5m x 1.2m (8ft x 4ft)* | 4.9m x 1.8m (16ft x 6ft)* |
| Ball Size | Size 3 | Size 3 |
| Game Duration | 10–15 min periods | 15–20 min periods |
*Flexibility: Whilst 8ft x 4ft and 16ft x 6ft are the recommended maximum goal sizes for Fun 4s and Super 5s respectively, many clubs and teams use different, smaller sized goals for each including pop-up goals or targets goals.
Key Rules & Advice for Playing
If you’re trying to learn what's happening whilst you're standing on the touchline, here are the "Golden Rules" used across Scotland:
- The "Retreating Line": When a goal is scored, or the keeper in 5s has a goal kick, the opposing team must retreat to the halfway line. This allows the kids to restart play without being immediately pressured.
- Kick-ins, Not Throw-ins: At this age, we want the ball at the feet. If the ball goes out of play, it is kicked back in.
- No Results or Tables: It is actually a breach of SYFA rules to publish scores or league tables for these age groups. The focus is on development, not winning.
- Equal Playing Time: Every child, regardless of ability, should receive equal time on the pitch.
- "Let Them Play": The SFA’s flagship campaign reminds parents to encourage from the sidelines but leave the coaching to the volunteers. Avoid shouting instructions like "Get rid of it!" or "Shoot!"
Summary
Fun 4s and Super 5s are about building confidence. By using size 3 footballs, smaller pitches, and smaller goals, the aim is to ensure that every child is an active participant in the game. It’s about the smile on their face after a dribble, not the number on a scoreboard.
