Silent Support Weekend Returns: Let Their Game Do the Talking!
Share
This weekend, on the 15th and 16th March 2025, the national Silent Support Weekend returns, aiming to promote positive behaviour on the touchlines of grassroots youth football across England.
This initiative encourages spectators to support young players through applause rather than verbal instructions, creating an environment where players can make their own decisions and enjoy the game without pressure.

The concept behind Silent Support Weekend is straightforward yet impactful: by reducing sideline noise, young players are empowered to find their voices on the pitch, enhance their communication skills, and develop independence in their gameplay. This approach not only fosters a more enjoyable experience but also contributes to the holistic development of the players.
This year's participation has reached unprecedented levels, with 194 leagues, encompassing 65,400 teams and over 878,000 players, signing up to take part, the highest numbers since the initiative's inception in 2022.
Such widespread involvement underscores the football community's commitment to nurturing a positive and supportive atmosphere for young kids playing sport and having fun.
James Kendall, Director of Football Development at England Football, expressed his enthusiasm for the initiative, stating:
"It’s fantastic to see record numbers of leagues across the country signing up to take part in Silent Support Weekend, promoting positive behaviours on and off the pitch. This weekend will provide young players with a great way to find their voice, make their own decisions and enjoy their game, without any distraction."
The guidelines for the weekend are simple: spectators are encouraged to applaud good play and maintain a supportive presence without verbal commentary, while coaches provide minimal guidance, allowing players to navigate the game independently. This creates a safe and developmental environment where the emphasis is on fun and personal growth rather than an overemphasis on winning.

At ChildrensFootball.com, we have consistently championed initiatives like Silent Support Weekend that prioritise the well-being and development of young players. In our previous posts on The FA's Silent Weekend initiative, we've highlighted how such initiatives empower players to think critically on the field and build confidence. This year's record participation is a testament to the growing recognition of the importance of positive support in youth football.
Love it or loathe it, it's not every weekend, and we believe it's a useful tool used occasionally to highlight the negative influence noise for the sidelines by us adults can sometimes have on children playing football.
As we gear up for this weekend, let's all commit to creating an atmosphere where our young footballers can thrive. By embracing the principles of Silent Support Weekend, we not only enhance the players' experience but also contribute to a healthier, more respectful football culture.
So, this weekend, let's put our hands together in applause, try to keep our instructions to ourselves, and watch our young stars shine on the pitch. Their game, their voice, our support.
